چکیده

Ohshiro, Hussain, and Weliky (2011) recently showed that ferrets reared with exposure to flickering spot stimuli, in the absence of oriented visual experience, develop oriented receptive fields. They interpreted this as refutation of efficient coding models, which require oriented input in order to develop oriented receptive fields. Here we show that these data are compatible with the efficient coding hypothesis if the influence of spontaneous retinal waves is considered. We demonstrate that independent component analysis learns predominantly oriented receptive fields when trained on a mixture of spot stimuli and spontaneous retinal waves. Further, we show that the efficient coding hypothesis provides a compelling explanation for the contrast between the lack of receptive field changes seen in animals reared with spot stimuli and the significant cortical reorganisation observed in stripe-reared animals.

Possible Roles of Spontaneous Waves and Dendritic Growth for Retinal Receptive Field Development

Several models of cortical development postulate that a Hebbian process fed by spontaneous activity amplifies orientation biases occurring randomly in early wiring, to form orientation selectivity. These models are not applicable to the development of retinal orientation selectivity, since they neglect the polarization of the retina's poorly branched early dendritic trees and the wavelike organ...

Slow Feature Analysis on Retinal Waves Leads to V1 Complex Cells

The developing visual system of many mammalian species is partially structured and organized even before the onset of vision. Spontaneous neural activity, which spreads in waves across the retina, has been suggested to play a major role in these prenatal structuring processes. Recently, it has been shown that when employing an efficient coding strategy, such as sparse coding, these retinal acti...

Cortical Map Development Driven by Spontaneous Retinal Activity Waves

Correlation-based learning (CBL) models have been quite successful when applied to the activity driven development of cortical orientation selectivity (OR) or ocular dominance (OD) maps. We ask under which conditions waves of spontaneous activity as have been observed in the developing retina may provide the proper activity to drive the CBL process. We demonstrate that the currently assumed sta...

Networks of integrate-and-fire neurons using Rank Order Coding B: Spike timing dependent plasticity and emergence of orientation selectivity

Rank Order Coding is an alternative to conventional rate coding schemes that uses the order in which a neuron’s inputs fire to encode information. In a visual system framework, we simulated the asynchronous waves of retinal spikes produced in response to natural scenes and used them to stimulate integrate-and-fire V1 neurons that implemented a standard learning rule based on spike timing. After...
